Greece Sees Easter Tourism Surge as Orthodox and Catholic Celebrations Align for First Time in Years

Greece is experiencing an exceptional boost in tourism this Easter season, thanks to a rare alignment of Orthodox and Catholic Easter, both falling on April 20 this year. This convergence, which hasn’t occurred in years, has created a perfect storm for increased travel activity, drawing a wave of domestic and international visitors to cities and islands across the country.

Athens and Thessaloniki Lead the Spring Travel Boom

Urban tourism is thriving, particularly in Athens and Thessaloniki, where hotel bookings and flight capacities have surged past 90%. Athens continues to attract European city-break travellers, while Thessaloniki is seeing a significant influx of visitors from the Balkans, drawn by rich cultural programming and religious ceremonies held throughout Holy Week.

Favorable spring weather, increased air connectivity, and accessible regional road networks have turned Greece’s two largest cities into festive epicenters, with tourism authorities noting one of the strongest early-season performances in recent memory.

Greek Islands Enjoy Early Season Demand

Island destinations are also flourishing. Corfu, long a favorite for Orthodox Easter, is preparing to welcome nearly 55,000 visitors eager to experience its traditional celebrations. Other island hotspots like Crete and Rhodes have seen bookings rise, prompting more hotels to open earlier than usual to accommodate the early crowds.

Santorini, despite experiencing mild seismic activity in February, is seeing encouraging advance reservations, reflecting travelers’ strong confidence in the island’s summer potential—even though most resorts are expected to reopen fully by May.

Short-Term Rentals Gain Major Ground

This year, short-term vacation rentals have gained unprecedented traction, with platforms reporting a 77% spike in bookings during Easter week. Travelers are increasingly favoring off-the-beaten-path destinations such as Volos, Kalamata, Ioannina, and Pelion. These areas are gaining popularity among visitors seeking peaceful, authentic getaways away from the traditional island rush.

Air Travel Nearly Maxed Out

Airlines are operating near capacity throughout the Easter period. Aegean Airlines, Greece’s flagship carrier, reports seat occupancy rates between 75% and 85% on most routes, with flights such as Athens to Thessaloniki exceeding 90%. Domestic traffic to islands like Samos, Kos, and Mytilene remains strong, while inbound flights from cities including Paris, Amsterdam, Lisbon, and Zurich are in high demand.

Holy Thursday and Good Friday are among the busiest travel days, with return trips extending through late April due to school holidays and family getaways.

A Bright Forecast for Summer 2025

This strong Easter performance is setting the tone for a potentially record-breaking summer. Increased international airlift, a renewed appetite for cultural and spiritual tourism, and early demand for both urban escapes and countryside retreats all point toward a stellar 2025 tourist season.

With a dynamic blend of sacred tradition, sun-soaked beauty, and world-class hospitality, Greece is once again affirming its place as one of the world’s most irresistible destinations—this Easter and beyond.
