Batam, a vibrant city in Indonesia’s Riau Islands, has welcomed a significant addition to its transport infrastructure with the grand opening of the Gold Coast International Ferry Terminal Bengkong. The international port officially began operations on the afternoon of Monday, April 14, 2025, marking a major milestone in the region’s efforts to attract more international travelers.
The launch event took place along the scenic reclaimed coastline of Bengkong, Batam, and drew high-level dignitaries from across the country. Among the prominent guests were Indonesia’s National Police Chief Listyo Sigit Prabowo, Coordinating Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono (AHY), and Johanis Tanak, the Vice Chairman of Indonesia’s Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK).
Batam welcomed approximately 1.3 million international tourists, reflecting an 11% increase compared to the 1.13 million arrivals recorded in 2023. Looking ahead, the city has set an ambitious target of attracting 1.7 million foreign visitors in 2025.
The ferry terminal is a privately developed project led by well-known Batam businessman Abi, whose vision for the port aligns with national objectives to boost regional connectivity and tourism.
Adding to the significance of the occasion, several regional leaders were present to witness the opening, including Riau Islands Governor Ansar Ahmad, Batam Mayor and Head of the Batam Indonesia Free Trade Zone Authority Amsakar Achmad, along with other local officials and politicians.
A ceremonial button-pressing by the dignitaries symbolized the official start of operations, followed by a presentation of commemorative plaques by Abi to key guests such as the Police Chief, AHY, and the KPK Vice Chairman. These tokens marked the collaborative spirit behind the project and its expected impact on Batam’s tourism and economic landscape.
Following the formalities, the delegation toured the newly constructed terminal facility to get a firsthand look at the infrastructure and its readiness. However, media personnel were not allowed to accompany the official group during the inspection.
