In an effort to boost Bengal’s status as a prime tourism investment destination, the state government is set to appoint an agency to manage promotional activities and public outreach at the Tourist Information Centers (TICs) located in the international and domestic terminals of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport, Kolkata. This move is aligned with the government’s goal of enhancing tourism through improved visitor engagement and information dissemination.
To facilitate this, the Tourism Department has issued a Request for Proposal (RFP) to hire an agency that will oversee the operations and staffing of the TICs, ensuring high-quality service to both domestic and international travelers. The agency’s key responsibility will be to deliver valuable tourism-related information in an easily accessible manner, ensuring that visitors are equipped with the necessary details to explore Bengal’s diverse attractions. A multilingual team will be deployed to assist tourists in English, Bengali, and Hindi, ensuring broad accessibility.
In addition to serving as information hubs, the TICs will be pivotal in the state’s global tourism outreach. The agency will assist in promoting Bengal at international tourism events and strengthening the state’s global presence. The work will include informing visitors about key tourist destinations across Bengal, such as WBTDCL properties and local homestays, offering help with itinerary planning, guiding tourists in accessing transport services, and coordinating protocol for government guests in collaboration with the Tourism Department.
The staffing plan involves nine personnel across eight TICs. These positions include eight information officers, split across both the international and domestic lounges. Four officers will be based in the domestic lounge with shifts from 6 am–2 pm and 2 pm–10 pm, while four will serve at the international lounge, covering the 2 pm–10 pm and 10 pm–6 am shifts. In addition, one facility maintenance attendant will be responsible for both lounges during the 10 am–6 pm hours.
The selected agency will also be tasked with providing comprehensive training to the TIC staff to ensure they are well-prepared to serve tourists. Information officers will be expected to have a Bachelor’s degree in Travel and Tourism Management or relevant qualifications, along with a minimum of one year’s experience in travel desks, marketing, or customer service roles. Their duties will include showcasing promotional materials and collaborating with the Airports Authority of India and other relevant authorities to create an attractive and informative environment for visitors.
This initiative is part of Bengal’s broader strategy to enhance international connectivity. In recent efforts, the state government has urged airlines to introduce direct flights to Kolkata, reinforcing the city’s potential as a significant global travel hub. The state is particularly focusing on attracting flights to major European destinations like London, Frankfurt, and Amsterdam, with growing demand among potential passengers, further boosting Bengal’s appeal to international tourists.
